About
With her curious drive, Tessa Brandsma explores and experiences the worlds of butchers, farmers, fishermen, bakers, millers and many more that produce our daily meals. From small to large scale and moving through a polarized agricultural landscape, she says to farmers: “teach me and tell me your story.”
For her, awareness, gratitude and responsibility for our daily food and those - people, land, animals - that make that possible is the foundation from which she wants to consume. As food is an intimate act of reciprocity, it is life giving more life, providing sustenance and nourishment. The people and processes involved deserve our attention.
Born from farmers' families and as a former mediator between government parties & agriculture, Tessa feels deeply connected to the people that make our food. Not only connected to their stories but also the seasonal processes & rhythms of craftsmanship, land and animals.
As a culinary anthropologist, food became her medium to understand people and the relationships they have to each other, their bodies and the natural world. Food and eating hold both universal and specific norms and values and show us where there is polarization, tension and urgency but also where there is pleasure, community and meaning.
